Tricks for Treats!

My new book Tricks for Treats is now out! I am the model for most of the tricks in the book. The lady says the hardest part was getting me to slow down enough to get the step by step pictures she wanted for each trick.

It is the perfect small training book if your human wants to teach you some tricks!

Doing your Job

It might be a job you dont enjoy, but try to find something good about it.

Me , I really dont like wearing stuff, but today, my job was to be a good model. I suffered through it and so can you!

Coats arent for Sissies!

I am always amazed how people, especially people with big dogs, comment on my coat.

They act like I must be a sissy to wear a coat

I wish I could tell them to go get their physics book out.

Small dogs loose heat quicker than big dogs.

Us small dogs need our coats, they help us stay out and fun longer

The best shape for retaining heat is round and you can see I am not round.

So when you see a small dog in a coat, don't snicker, I see plenty of large dogs in coats too!

My favorite coats are from Foggy Mountain Dog Coats ,

I have had them for years and they last and last!

Too many books, not enough time!

Humans tend to walk by people they don't know, often they don't even make eye contact.

Dogs know better and we often politely greet each other. Today , instead of walking by, take a second and give the stranger a smile, you might just make their day!

A while back I started giving advice to humans. They are silly creatures and need all the help us dogs can give them.

Now look me in the eyes, dont you think your human could use some sage advice?

n cold days such as these, I advise you to get along with others so they might sleep on you and keep you warm! Actually this is the first time I have allowed Pilgrim to get so close and actually sleep with me. He was pretty toasty!

the Turkeys in the Yard

The last couple of days, I have been watching. The turkeys have been coming in the yard, the back yard, the front yard, everywhere.
I would love to go out and chase them but the lady says they are bigger than me.

I must admit that as a terrier, I love getting down and dirty. I love digging, I love rolling in stinky things. I have learned over the 11 years of life that humans highly prize cleanliness. If you love to get dirty, you had better learn to be good about submitting for the eventual cleaning that comes next.

You don't have to like it, but you do have to be good about letting the clean freaks cleaning you!

Rainy Day Boredom Buster

Rainy day boredom is the worst! I can't get out and chase squirrels or even take a walk.

Unlike many dogs, I find naps rather boring and would rather be working on something, anything, but sleep! Night is for sleeping, day is for fun.

Luckily the lady understands this and gets out the treat ball.

She does insist on hiding it and making me work for the tiny treat inside.

Once I have played with the treat ball, if I am lucky we move on to another activitity

This is one of my favorite games. Take a tennis ball and wrap it up in a beach towel, then have a ball getting the ball!

After the storm , I discovered ghost crab holes that were quite extensive. The lady thought I was doing a sea turtle a favor by digging a hole big enough for one to lay her eggs in!

Aww, the beach! Last week the people took me to the beach. We had a noreaster the first night and the wind howled most of the week.
One day was perfect and I got to enjoy hunting the elusive sand crabs.

The storm caused quite a bit of damage to the dunes but did expose the holes!

Nothing better than digging for sand crabs.

Just as nice is the nice comfy sofa at the end of hard digging session!

Close Encounters of the Puppy Kind!

Once again, the lady has a bunch of puppies over to photograph. I love puppies and often get to play with the little goobers.
It takes a while for them to figure out what I am !

Once they figure out I am a dog, they have to see if I could be a mother dog!Sometimes puppies get a little too personal but I am good and tolerate it.

Then once we start playing, I have to lay down so they won't be scared of me.

The down side of having puppies over is the cleanup that is involved afterwards, tho I let the lady do that work!

Here is a Lab that is finding drugs , he had just indicated the box as having drugs.

Dogs work for fun so here he is getting his reward a towel they use for training, a nice game of tug is the only reward he needs.

Aw, the life of a working dog! My lady often puts me to work and actually I enjoy working most of the time. For this video we did have to do things over several times. Still in the long run it was fun, how many of us dogs can say they reviewed a book!!

How to Approach the Day!

Do you ever wonder how you will make it through the day?
In these hard times, a good attitude on how you approach the day can make all the difference in how your day goes.

Take some advice from your furry friends. Take a break and get active. It will help clear your brain and make it easier to think through things.

Jump for joy! Even if things are bad, if you can remember the things that are good in your life it helps.

Take time to play, it also clears the brain.

If nothing else helps, howl at the moon!

My lady is often looking for things to keep me busy. Sometimes she hides my treat balls , while I have to wait downstairs. Once she tells me to find, I take off like a bullet!

I look here, I look there, I look everywhere.

In the long run, I always find what I seek and seek till I find! If you want something bad enought seek till you find it!

We all grow up!

Once I was a puppy, I thought like a puppy, I peed like a puppy, well I was a puppy. Even puppies grow up , and while I was busy growing up so did my human John. He wasnt a pup when I cam to live with my family, but he was a youngun.Now he has grown up.

He found himself a lovely young lady and he married her. Now when they come to visit I get to have twice as much love.

Enjoy each day whether you share it with a puppy or humans. Live in the moment and take time to love those you love!

Wake up Cheerful!

I have found that many humans are not very cheerful when they get up. They have to have alone time, coffee and food before they are human.

Take a lesson from us animals. Wake up cheerful, assume each day will bring something good. Some days it wont work but , give it a try.

The humans in your life will be glad you at least make an attempt to be cheerful!

Does your Community Have a Pool Pawty?

Last Saturday, the lady took me to a puppy pool pawty. It was too much fun, I loved swimming and I must say I loved barking at other dogs that wanted my toy!
Some dogs learned to swim

Some praticed for Dock Dogs diving.

Some thought if they dog paddled from the side of the pool, the toy might magically come to them!

Some made huge leaps for the toys. Fun was had by all, you should ask your community if you can have a pool pawty after they close for the summer!

Follow your dog's example, enjoy each and every day!

Watch out for Evil Cat Attacks! Attacked while Jumping!

Here I am , obeying the lady's wishes which today happened to be doing retrievals over a jump.

Everything is going fine. I am doing my jump that the mister always asks the lady why she wants me to jump such a small fence when i clear it by so much.

I bring her the toy everytime, but I am now noticing that Evil cat Pilgrim has come over to watch the action. When we train at lunch he always comes over and usually lays under my jump which means I have to worry about him clawing at me while I jump.

While it might look like I am running out on this jump, I am merely taking evasive action while still obeying the lady,note Pilgrim was waiting for me on the other side of the jump .

Attack, see why I call him the Attack Cat?

I had to drop my toy and tell him to knock it off!

The lady came and removed him from the training area and I got back to obeying her commands. Sometimes training means having to ignore what you can, and removing what you can't!

Rainy days can be quite boring! I was just laying around, then I remembered my elephant toy.

After a while even he got boring.

I finally had to resort to begging the lady to play. Sometimes it is best to just ask , you might be suprised by the answer!

Learn a new Trick!

Humans need to exercise their brains more , us dogs learn new tricks to keep from getting senile. I love trick training so much that every day at lunch the lady spends about 20 minutes teaching me new things.

I can really feel fall in the air today! while it might be cloudy, it is cooler. When I went out this am, to my suprise and delight, I discovered my old friends are back and gathering nuts!

Now I can look forward to some lively activity chasing the squirrels!

So accept the fact that summer is waning and embrace the fall!

Toys! Treat Dispensing Toys!!

Some of you know how much I love my toys, not just any old toy tho, treat dispensing toys!

The lady thinks it gives me plenty of exercise, both mental and physical. While I do get exercise, I hardly notice I am having so much fun. If your person hasnt given you a treat dispensing toy, you need to do some begging. Here I am with my current favorite, the Tug-a-Jug. I do bean myself in the head, but I have learned to duck!

Allow Hugs! Now many of you are probally cuddlers. Even tho I am small and many think I should be a lap dog, I am not.
I do find that even if cuddling is not something I adore, I can tolerate it and to be a good canine citizen, I must tolerate it!
Once again the lady wants pics ,this time a few of herself and me. I did get some tasty treats for tolerating the cuddle time!

Modeling Pays Off!

Harper, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, just got done with a modeling shoot. She got to model costumes for the holiday many humans call Howl-o-ween for Muttropolis, an online utopia for pets and their parents. She is adorable as Caption Jack Sparrow the pirate, with her Peter Pan costume coming in second, in my humble opinion.

Lastly she is a giraffe, and frankly Harper doesn't look as cheerful about that one!

Work work work, I swear the humans just dont know when to quit! This summer the lady took a lighting class and guess who was roped into being her victim all summer long! Actually the minute she moved to the studio area , I knew it was time to work! I have a good work ethic and am always willing to give my best even if it is for a measly little morsel of dog food. Sometimes I am lucky and she gives me a decent treat.

Here is where she trained me to lift my paw on command, she loves my hunting look, tho if I was hunting , I sure wouldnt be looking at her!

At my house , the word squirrel has been shorted to SQ, the humans really think I have no idea what that means but of course I do. The other day I was up in the lady's office, sound asleep. I suddenly knew it, there were squirrels out in the back yard. It took the lady a while to believe me, or at least give in to my insistent barking. When she let me out the back door, she acted shocked that there were actually squirrels in the yard. As I took off after the buggers, she stood there shaking her head, trying to figure out how I knew they were there!

Nothing better than a rainy fall day for chasing SQs!

Each fall the humans pack me and all of my junk up , strap me in the car and head to the beach. The houses are cheaper, the weather cooler and best of all the beaches are empty except for other dogs and their owners!

Rain out side, what will I do? Time to beg the lady to fill the treat ball.

After it is filled, I tried to see if rolling on it makes the treat come out.

Then I play soccer with it and I make sure to backtrack to make sure I didn't miss any morsel that might have dropped out along the way. Tommorrow I will show some more ways to enjoy your treat ball.

Humans have a disease I call Rushitis. They rush here, rush there, rush everywhere. Sometimes they need help learning to slow down.

I find whining at the door helps. It makes the lady take me out. While I snoot around, she gets a chance to take a deep breath, and enjoy the beauty that surrounds her.

So today, take your dog for a walk and take time to smell the flowers, just watch out for ticks!

Sometimes one just has to be patient. I knew the lady wanted a picture of Pilgrim and me together.

She grabbed the camera, and Pilgrim decided to take the opportunity to show his true colors.

Notice I now have my ears back , his paws are up in the air and he is rolling over.

Next thing I know I am being attacked. Sometimes I wish I was a bit bigger!

Earth Day is today!

Sometimes I am so sad! Thinking about the way the humans treat the Earth can be very depressing. Today is Earth Day, and I hope the humans that read this post do something to help with the environment today. It doesn't need to be a big thing, something as small as drying your laundry outside today is a beginning. Turn off the lights you don't need, get out and walk instead of using a treadmill.

I find eating vegetables is very good for me. I love carrots, they are low in calories and they just taste good. Get your owner to give you a carrot today and maybe they will improve their health by eating one themselves!

YOu kow how much I love the beach from my posts but my friend Tia , the Boston Terrier also loves the beach. Not all of us dogs love the beach in the same way. I love to dig but Tia wouldnt like the sand in her nose. She prefers to sit around and look pretty. Whatever floats your boat I always say!
